Special Cases of Solution Sets (Absolute Value) / Solving and Graphing?

In my book- it says the the solution set would be

Where did they get the numbers for X? Is there any special way to go about geting numbers for my soultion set? Am I missing something- or are they just random numbers? I would really appreciate some help- thanks :)Special Cases of Solution Sets (Absolute Value) / Solving and Graphing?
the way it was explained to me was you chose the numbers but you want some positive and some negative number and you want 0 so you have a test site
